Accessibility Standards

Why We Need Accessibility Standards

At VideoA11y, we believe that accessibility should be a foundational part of all technological experiences. Unfortunately, many areas—especially in video entertainment, screen readers, text-to-speech engines, virtual reality, and augmented reality—currently lack consistent, standardized approaches to accessibility. This gap creates barriers for individuals with disabilities who rely on assistive technologies to interact with digital content.

Our mission is to address this by developing open-source accessibility standards that fill these gaps and set new benchmarks for inclusivity. These standards aim to ensure that all users, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy seamless and equitable experiences across all forms of media and digital environments.

Our Approach

For several years, our team has collaborated with leading partners to research and create accessibility standards that can be adopted industry-wide. These standards are designed to:

  • Improve compatibility between media platforms and assistive technologies like screen readers and text-to-speech engines.
  • Address the unique accessibility challenges of emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.
  • Foster consistency across different platforms, ensuring a smoother, more intuitive user experience for everyone.

A Community-Driven Effort

We are committed to making these standards as dynamic and effective as possible. That’s why we will be releasing them gradually over the coming months, encouraging open dialogue within the accessibility community. By gathering feedback and insights from industry professionals, developers, and users with disabilities, we aim to refine and evolve these standards continuously, keeping pace with technological advancements.
